Katherine Philips is an essential writer to the early english women writers era because she introduces a new kind of love between two female friends. As a wife she has endured the struggles of child bearing and the children not surviving. Katherine suffered the loss of her children shortly after both were born. In Epitaph, Katherine writes to express a memoir to her son. Katherine expresses the mood of melancholy and despair. In the first stanza she writes "Youth and beauty are both dust." By stating this is provides the reader with the idea that Katherine sees everyone as just a mere ends towards death. This epitaph provides detailed explanation towards her sons death as Katherine tries to make excuses for his death. In all I believe Katherine suffered and turned towards her friend for support which leads to the proclaimed romance in Katherines history.
