In Laustic Marie de France tells a tale including adultery and love yet leaves the story ending in an unusual way leaving the mind to wander as to what happens to the wife and her lover. The use of a Laustic or nightingale can symbolize the longing of freedom that the lovers have. In a way you could take the knight placing the Laustic in a very intricate, gold box and carrying it around with him wherever he went as him forever loving his neighbor and carrying around that love forever. This lai was interesting but truly left you guessing what the rest of the tale could be.
