In Yonec, Marie de France switches back to the main role of the story being female. Though there is adultery and betrayal from the young maiden, you find yourself sympathizing with her because of the cruelty and jealously of her husband. Was there justice in the husband killing her lover? Or was there justice in the son of her lover killing the husband? Both are debatable and it depends on the outlook of the reader towards the lai. I found it intriguing that the son easily turned on the husband though he was raised as his son, as well as the town accepting him and the story so quickly as to make him their lord. This lai truly shows the characteristics of medieval romance, hero-knight and courtly love. Marie de France truly captures the reader in this story with murder, adultery, love and betrayal.
